AIA SPOTLIGHTS PRESERVATION OF ACADEMICAL VILLAGE CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Sept. 24 -- The American Institute of Architects has announced that the restoration of Thomas Jefferson's Academical Village, the University of Virginia preservation program directed by James Murray Howard, has been selected for inclusion in the premier edition of its new book, Historic Resources Review I, scheduled for release in Spring 1997. The U.Va. preservation project was chosen from more than 100 submissions to be among the 60 representing the best of preservation work across the country. For the past 14 years, Howard has directed the comprehensive restoration program for the historic center of the University, a World Heritage List site. Earlier this year, he was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for his notable contributions to the advancement of the architecture profession here and abroad, especially in preservation. At the University of Virginia, his academic courses, which use the historic site as a laboratory for preservation theory and technique, as well as the student internships offered for the past 10 years, are unique among American universities. Howard's selection for publication represents his fourth AIA honor in three years. Besides his election as Fellow, he received a Historic Preservation Award from the Virginia Society AIA and a national Institute Honor Award. ### September 23, 1996 Television reporters should call our TV News Office at (804) 924-7550.
