LAW PROFESSOR MICHAEL KLARMAN IS AWARDED TRAYNOR PRIZE FOR LEGAL SCHOLARSHIP CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Sept. 24 -- University of Virginia law professor Michael J. Klarman is the first recipient of the School of LawÕs Roger and Madeleine Traynor Faculty Achievement Award for Excellence in Legal Scholarship. Klarman, a member of the faculty since 1987, teaches legal history, American constitutional history, and constitutional theory. His most recent publications include "Brown, Racial Change and the Civil Rights Movement," and "Rethinking the Civil Rights Movement," both in the Virginia Law Review. The Traynor Prize was established in memory of Roger J. Traynor, former Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court, by his wife, Madeleine. Judge Traynor was a visiting faculty member at the law school in 1970. The $2,000 cash prize is designed to reward faculty for outstanding written scholarship, and the award recipient is selected by a committee of law school faculty members. ### September 23, 1996
