WELL-KNOWN POLITICAL WRITER JOE KLEIN TO SPEAK AT U.VA. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Sept. 10 -- Author and columnist Joe Klein will speak on "Politics 1996: Behind the Headlines" on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 8 p.m. in Cabell Hall Auditorium at the University of Virginia. After his talk, Klein will answer questions from the audience. A long-time political commentator, Klein is contributing editor at Newsweek magazine, where his "Public Lives" column addresses national and international affairs. He joined Newsweek during the 1992 presidential race and helped the magazine earn numerous awards including those citing coverage of Bill Clinton's victory and administration. Klein appears regularly on "Face the Nation" and has provided commentary on American politics for "CBS Sunday Morning News" and "The CBS Evening News with Dan Rather." Although well-known for his political commentary, Klein gained substantial media attention this summer after it was revealed that he is author of "Primary Colors," a satire inspired by the 1992 presidential race. Klein said he denied the media's repeated attempts to identify him as the book's author because of professional and familial obligations. The book has been on Publishers Weekly best-seller list for more than 20 weeks. Tickets for Klein's talk, sponsored by University Union's Speakers Committee, go on sale Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the information desks in Peabody Hall and the Forestry Building at U.Va. Advance tickets are free to students and $4 for the general public. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door for $2 for students and $5 for non-students. "With his long-time coverage of politics, Joe Klein will offer insights into what really goes on during presidential campaigns," said Erin Wuchte, student chair of the speakers committee.
