RELEASE ON RECEIPT Notice to Reporters: A conference schedule is attached. CONFERENCE WILL PROBE ROLE OF ETHICS IN SOCIETY CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Sept. 27 -- Approximately 125 people are expected to examine the role of ethics in society during the Charlottesville Conference on Values and Leadership Oct. 2-4 at the Omni Hotel. Keynote addresses will be delivered by leading authorities in the field of ethics at the conference, sponsored by the UCEA Center for the Study of Leadership and Ethics. Among those expected to speak are: Thomas Sergiovanni, professor of education and administration at Trinity University; Kenneth Leithwood, head of the Center for Leadership Development at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education; Nel Noddings, the Lee L. Jacks Professor of Child Education at Stanford University; and Charol Shakeshaft, chair, department of administration and policy studies at Hofstra University. UCEA is a joint collaboration between the University of Virginia's Curry School of Education and the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. Center organizers view the Charlottesville conference as a means of establishing a research agenda that explores the role of ethics in modern society. "The conference will explore a broad range of issues and concerns related to values, ethics, and leadership," said Margaret Grogan, center co-director. Conference participants will consider a broad spectrum of ethical questions in small sessions led by U.Va. faculty and local educators. For example, Curry School Dean David W. Breneman and law professor Robert O'Neil will lead a panel addressing ethical issues involving tenure. ### September 26, 1997 For more information, contact the UCEA Center at (804) 924-0857 or e-mail mgrogan@virginia.edu.
