LEADER OF NATIONAL BOARD THAT SETS TEACHER STANDARDS TO GIVE PUBLIC TALK SEPT. 10 AT U.VA. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Sept. 9 -- James A. Kelly, president of the national board that establishes rigorous certification standards for teachers, will be the first speaker during the Curry Forum on Educational Issues this fall at the University of Virginia. Kelly, president of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, will begin his talk at 1 p.m. in Room 004C on the ground floor of Ruffner Hall. The national board was established in 1987 in response to a recommendation that the Carnegie Task Force on Teaching as a Profession suggested in "A Nation Prepared: Teachers for the 21st Century." The board establishes high standards for teachers to meet in order to gain national certification. During his talk, Kelly will explain the goals, operations and future plans of the national board. Kelly's talk is the first of more than two dozen presentations by nationally recognized scholars during the Curry School of Education forum. Started four years ago by Curry School faculty, the graduate-level course focuses on key issues in education, particularly as they relate to improving teaching. Among the topics to be discussed this semester are Title IX, the Core Knowledge Curriculum, teaching gifted and talented students and the future of education in Virginia. All talks are open to the public. ### September 8, 1997 NOTICE TO THE MEDIA: A preliminary schedule of forum speakers is enclosed.
