Program Information
No other figure has done as much to reveal our passions, explore our fantasies, tickle our imaginations, or plumb the darkest depths of the human condition as William Shakespeare. Join us for a program to delight the senses as we enter the world of Shakespeare and explore his work, his life, and legacy. Housed at historic Trinity College at Oxford University, we will embark on a journey of discovery that will bring the page to life as we delve into the world of Shakespeare. Led by American Shakespeare Center Director Ralph A. Cohen and top notch Oxford Scholars, travel back in time to gain a new perspective on Shakespeare’s role in our culture today. This program features a lively mix of activities. You will enjoy interactive sessions and small group discussions with a talented faculty and interesting fellow participants. Traveling beyond the dreaming spires of Oxford, you will visit and explore the places Shakespeare knew and see how they are being brought to life today. You will enjoy behind the scenes access and the keen insight that only experienced scholars and practitioners can bring. You will experience first-hand how Shakespeare's works live and breathe today through the work of some of the most talented acting troupes in the world.
Program Highlights Include:
- Living amidst the beautiful gardens and historic backdrops of Trinity College at Oxford University. Steeped in history, the UVA seminar at Oxford offers “Fabulous food, great faculty, unbelievable buildings and grounds—just a wonderful experience all around”
- Interactive, thought-provoking sessions led by Ralph Alan Cohen and Oxford faculty that bring Shakespeare’s world to life and discover ways to bring his work to life.
- An in depth look at some of Shakespeare’s most enduring works under the guidance of experienced faculty mentors.
- A day spent exploring Stratford-Upon-Avon with expert guides who can paint a picture of the 16th century life of Shakespeare, featuring a performance of Romeo and Juliet by the Royal Shakespeare Company.
- Shakespeare's London with two days and one night (Hilton London Docklands Riverside-4 Star) in London to discover the world Shakespeare knew with expertly guided tours of Southwark and a special tour of Shakespeare heritage sites on the north bank of the Thames.
- A behind the scenes look at the Globe Theater and a chance to work on the Globe stage with one of the world’s greatest theater companies.
- Two performances at Shakespeare’s Globe with in depth analysis and preparation by Ralph A. Cohen.

Program Faculty
Ralph Alan Cohen is the Executive Director and Director of Education at Shenandoah Shakespeare's American Shakespeare Center. He is also Professor of English at the Mary Baldwin College/Shenandoah Shakespeare joint Master of Letters/Master of Fine Arts in Shakespeare and Renaissance Literature in Performance program. He has twice guest edited special teaching issues of Shakespeare Quarterly and has published articles on teaching Shakespeare as well as on Shakespeare, Jonson, and Elizabethan staging. He has directed over twenty professional productions of Shakespeare's plays, Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus, and a student production of Thomas Middleton's Your Five Gallants, which he also edited for Oxford University Press's forthcoming Complete Works of Thomas Middleton. Ralph is a former professor of English at James Madison University. In 2002, he was the project director for the National Endowment for the Humanities-sponsored institute, "Shakespeare's Theatres, Inside and Out," held at the Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton and Shakespeare's Globe in London. Ralph has been the Faculty Director of the University of Virginia School of Continuing and Professional Studies Shakespeare Seminar since 2000.
Lynn Robson, B.A., M.A., Ph.D., University of Oxford, is a lecturer at Regent's Park College University of Oxford, where she teaches Renaissance Literature and Shakespeare to graduates and undergraduates. She has published "The Bloody Papist": Murder, Papists and Propoganda in Early Modern Prose Murder Pamphlets in the Renaissance Journal and her research interests include popular print culture of the Renaissance, in particular pamphlets and murder stories. She has lectured extensively on Shakespeare including topics such as "Shakespeare's Witty Women" and "Puritan Attacks on Shakespeare's Stage."

Jim Baker is the University of Virginia Oxford Seminar Program Co-Director and Associate Director of the University Center of the University of Virginia School of Continuing and Professional Studies.
Ashleigh Edwards is the Program Administrator for the program.
Chris Day is the University of Virginia Oxford Seminar Program Co-Director. Chris is a Lecturer in Local History and a Fellow of Kellogg College at Oxford University. He has served as a Director of previous successful University of Virginia Oxford Seminars, including the 2005 Program The Essence of England: The Insider's Cotswolds and the 2004 Program The Victorian Age.

- Program Tours in Stratford including tours of Shakespeare Birthplace, Anne Hathaway's Cottage, John Hall's House, and Holy Trinity.
- Program Tours in London including a tour of Southwark, a 16th Century London Literati Walk and special backstage access to Shakespeare's Globe.
- Program sessions led by Ralph A. Cohen, Director and Co-Founder of the American Shakespeare Center, and Oxford Scholars.
- Tickets to three Shakespeare plays, including Romeo and Juliet performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company and Antony and Cleopatra and The Comedy of Errors at Shakespeare's Globe.
- An Oxford guidebook and specially prepared instructional materials.

Airfare to the program and ground transportation to and from Oxford is not included in the program fee.
