If I could give one piece of advice to incoming international students…

I would tell international students to take their time in order to adjust to the new environment. They will be able to use the knowledge and the methodology they have acquired at their home countries and, at the same time, they will develop new abilities in order to adapt to the new circumstances. They will face many challenges that will represent an amazing opportunity for their personal growth.

What class do you think is a “must take” for any UVA student and why?

I would say that PLIR 101 (taught by Professor John Owen each spring) is definitely a ‘must take’ for any student interested in gaining an analytical framework on international contemporary issues. Lectures are extremely interesting, students express supported views during discussions… Just take it!

A resource that was very helpful to me here was…

Many people were very supportive and eased my way into UVa. Parke Muth, Dean of International Admissions, has been extremely helpful in helping me get acquainted with the new environment and culture here. Bruce Reynolds, Director of Undergrad Studies for Economics, has been an extremely wise advisor to me during these months, helping me with my schedule. I am very thankful for their help.

Which features of the University have impressed you the most so far?

To begin with, the wide array of opportunities you may find concerning academic work. I worked in the news section of the Cavalier Daily last semester (writing for a university newspaper had been a long-term dream for me); this semester I’m serving as a tutor for students in the Economics’ department. Hard-working people will feel that their effort pays off.

Besides, at U.Va. it is very easy to get in touch with professors - either via e-mail, going to their office hours, etc. This has helped me a lot. I would tell any international student: don’t be afraid to ask, you will always receive an answer.
