Deferred Student Information

Thank you for considering the University of Virginia during your college search. As we continue to review applications for first year admission, we thought it would be helpful to provide the information below as a guide to better understanding the deferral process at UVA. We wish you the best as you enter the final semester of your senior year.

Deferred Student FAQs

What does receiving an Early Action admission decision of deferral mean?

If you were deferred from Early Action to Regular Decision it means that we feel your application deserves another review. You possess many of the strengths we expect our admitted students to present in their applications but we cannot offer you admission at this stage. In many cases we want to see how deferred students are doing in the classroom during their senior year.

Will my application be reviewed again?

Yes. We will review all deferred applicants again in the regular decision process.

When will I receive a final admission decision?

We will release all final admission decisions online no later than April 1, 2012. You may want to read Dean J's blog for updates.

Would planning a visit help my chances of gaining admission?

No. Demonstrating your interest in attending is not a factor used in our admission process. While we encourage all of our prospective students to visit and learn more about the University, visiting will not have any impact on your admission decision.

May I speak with someone regarding my application or decision?

Our admission staff will be focused on completing our admission review and will not be available to discuss decisions or individual pieces of a student’s application.

What if I took an SAT, ACT with writing, or SAT Subject test after the November 1 application deadline?

Please send any updated testing to our admission office as soon as it becomes available. We will review your application again in Regular Decision. So please be sure to forward new test results immediately.

When should I send my midyear grade report?

Please submit your midyear grades as soon as they become available. Typically these are automatically sent by your high school counselor.

May I amend or update my application?

Other than midyear grade updates or new standardized test results, we will not be able to review any edits to your application or additional information. Please do not send additional information, including recommendations, during this time.

How many EA students do you expect to admit in RD?  Historically how many have been admitted?

Since this is our first year implementing Early Action admission, we do not have any historical data on the number of deferred students gaining admission in Regular Decision review. Additionally, we do not have any number or quota in mind as to the number of deferred students we would like to enroll. We will review the deferred students during regular admission and admit those whom we feel are the most prepared to impact our classrooms and community.

When will I receive information on Financial Aid?

Students interested in receiving financial aid must apply by the March 1 deadline. Admitted students will receive their financial aid awards in early April.  To learn more about our financial aid program and AccessUVA, please visit the Student Financial Services website.
