Welcome to UVA International!
There is a whispering wall tucked away on the hallowed Grounds of UVA, and if you press your ear up against the cold marble you can sometimes hear all the secrets of the university. Close your eyes, and the whirling leaves say: Go experience firsthand an American football game - wear orange and watch your toes turn blue in the cold - you'll love it! Hold your breath, and hear the wispy clouds sigh: Watch out for the squirrels on Grounds! Virginian squirrels are dangerous- they shoot acorns at you! (Coming from Tokyo, where squirrels are extremely rare, this was valuable advice for me indeed!) But perhaps the greatest secret of all is one that international students at UVA don't need the whispering wall to hear: At the University of Virginia, you are at your second home. Welcome.
Yes, welcome to the University of Virginia. Going to college is undeniably a daunting experience - and certainly more so for international students, who have to surmount all the challenges of university life in a foreign and unfamiliar land. Hopefully, this newsletter will be a useful guide in helping you determine where you wish to call your home-away-from-home for the next four years.
The UVA International Newsletter is a student-produced newsletter specifically designed to help prospective students learn about life, studies, and the myriad of opportunities available at the University of Virginia. Consider it your surrogate whispering wall, if you will. Here, international students hailing from far corners of the globe will tell you about their real-life, personal experiences at UVA. Lose yourself on the winding garden paths; spend time building trash-combusting kilns with a professor; delve into research as an undergraduate student; organize a conference between ambassadors to increase awareness of Latin American affairs; get involved as a first year; settle into your new home. At the University of Virginia, student initiative and virtually boundless resources fuse to unveil a dynamic and diverse world full of possibilities. Use this newsletter, the
recommended links, and the first edition of UVA International to get a glimpse of our exciting world, as our international students see it.
Of course, the University of Virginia contains countless other precious secrets, secrets that cannot be captured by a few mere pages of an online newsletter. To hear these secrets, however, you will have to come to Grounds, press your ear against the whispering wall, and experience UVA for yourself.
