What was Jefferson's vision? A product of the Enlightenment, Thomas Jefferson was a champion of education throughout his life. He believed that an educated citizenry was essential to the nation he helped to create. Establishing the University of Virginia fulfilled a long-held dream for Jefferson, who planned its curriculum, oversaw the hiring of its first faculty, and designed its buildings. Jefferson envisioned a public university that attracts public-minded people who take seriously their commitment to their community and their world; people who are aware, active, and involved. Above all, U.Va. reflects his intent to prepare and produce leaders—independent and intelligent citizens ready to make their mark on the future.
