What's the latest technology?

Whether you're taking notes on a laptop in class, answering e-mail in your dorm, IM-ing a friend at another school, or surfing the Web on the Lawn, you can enjoy the freedom and convenience of living in a wireless world at U.Va.

PC Magazine named U.Va. as one of its 2007 Top 20 Wired Colleges. Based on the Wi-Fi standard, the University's system is Grounds-wide, allowing students and faculty access to digital information just about everywhere they need it. There's no charge to connect to the U.Va. network, but your system will need either a wireless card or built-in wireless.

Another resource available to all students is Cavalier Computers, a division of the U.Va. Bookstore. Owned entirely by the University, Cavalier Computers offers students University-recommended hardware and software, special educationally priced models, as well as service and support. The University of Virginia Library is a leader in creating electronic centers accessible to students on Grounds and around the world. Here are two of the more popular tech centers that enrich many students' learning experience at U.Va.

Robertson Media Center and Digital Media Lab
Here, students can use equipment and support for the digitization and editing of ../images, sound and video. Staff members are on hand to assist students with digital projects and help faculty prepare electronic course materials.

Electronic Text Center
One of the first of its kind, the center offers more than 70,000 e-texts and 1,800 e-books available for downloading to an e-book reader. More than 8.5 million e-books have been downloaded to date. Within the center is the Scholar's Lab, the Library's newest high tech space for study and research. It's just around the corner from Alderman Café and offers comfortable and flexible seating, spaces to work on collaborative projects, high-end computer workstations, scanning equipment, and specialized software programs.
