- Writer; attended 1826 The author of such classics as The Raven and The Cask of Amontillado, Edgar Allan Poe dropped out of U.Va. after a year, having lost his tuition due to chronic gambling.
- Actress and writer; College '92 Tina Fey, the former head writer of Saturday Night Live, currently stars as Liz Lemon in NBC's 30 Rock, for which she is a writer and executive producer.
- Professional baseball player; College '05 Third baseman Ryan Zimmerman was drafted in the first round as the fourth overall pick by the Washington Nationals in 2005. He finished second in the 2006 NL Rookie of the Year voting.
- Polar explorer; attended 1908 Also famous for his Antarctic expeditions, Rear Admiral Richard Byrd led the first attempt to fly over the North Pole, which earned him the Medal of Honor.
- CBS News Anchor; College '79 Now the anchor for CBS Nightly News, Katie Couric was co-anchor of NBC's Today Show from 1991 through 2006.
- News correspondent, McIntire '96; professional football player, McIntire '96 Tiki Barber, retired running back for the New York Giants, is now a national correspondent for NBC's Today Show. Ronde Barber has played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers since 1997.
