Where will I live?
All first-year students live on Grounds. The residence halls, residential colleges, and various language houses are reasonable in cost and help students settle into life at U.Va.
McCormick Road and Alderman Road Houses
Most first-years live here, just steps from dining facilities and within easy walking distance from most academic buildings. The 10 McCormick Road houses are organized in a hall system with 20 students per hall. The buildings are co-ed, although the floors are single sex. Most accommodations in the 13 Alderman Road house are suites, each with five double rooms, a large common room, and a bathroom.
Malone and Weedon
Associated with Alderman Road houses, but located at Hereford College, Malone and Weedon house a total of 190 students in 32 double rooms and 126 single rooms. A part of the traditional first-year residence hall program, they share the setting of a residential college.
Residential College—Brown and Hereford In the residential colleges, students take an active role in planning social and educational activities, such as short courses, cultural events, and speakers series. Brown College includes Monroe Hill House, once the home of U.S. President James Monroe and his wife, Elizabeth. Hereford Residential College contains modern residences, a spacious dining hall, and a tranquil setting on Observatory Hill. Hereford is home to about 400 undergraduates from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures.
International Residential College and Foreign Language Houses
The International Residential College makes interaction with international students and global learning a daily routine. It houses more than 300 students, with as many as 60 first-years. U.Va.'s language houses, which offer a total-immersion approach to learning a new language, include French, Italian, German, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Hindi-Urdu, Arabic, Persian, and Hebrew.
