Admissions Sessions and Tours

INFORMATION SESSIONS

Thank you for your interest in visiting U.Va.

The Office of Admission offers information sessions for prospective students and their families. These briefings, led by the deans of admission, are immediately followed by student life focused tours of the University Grounds led by undergraduate University Guide Service members. No reservations are necessary. Sessions and tours are accessible to persons using wheelchairs. To request an interpreter for the hearing impaired, call us in advance. Please note that for the safety and security of our students, walking tours will not go inside residence halls.

**Important 2009 Summer Parking Information - Please Read**

From June 19th through August 31st (with the exception of July 17th and 18th, see below***) -
Visitors are invited to park in the Emmet/Ivy Garage located at 123 Emmet Street South, Charlottesville, VA 22903 behind the Cavalier Inn and Italian Villa. Parking is FREE in this garage from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday; the garage is closed on Sundays. We cannot validate parking elsewhere.

Directions to the Emmet/Ivy Parking Garage: Utilize exit 118B off Interstate 64 and travel toward Charlottesville on the 29/250 Bypass. Take second exit onto Route 250 Business East. Turn right at the top of the exit. Turn left at third traffic signal into garage entrance.

***On July 17th and 18th ONLY -
The Emmet/Ivy Garage will be closed for maintenance and visitors may park at the Culbreth Road Garage located at 130 Culbreth Road, Charlottesville, VA 22903. Parking is FREE in this garage from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. We cannot validate parking elsewhere. Directions to the Culbreth Road Garage: From Interstate 64, take exit 118B towards Charlottesville. Merge onto the Route 29/250 Bypass. Take the second exit onto Ivy Road. Pass through the intersection of Ivy Road and Emmet Street (Route 29) and turn left onto Culbreth Road.

Unless indicated otherwise, visitors are invited to park in the Central Grounds Parking Garage (400 Emmet Street South, Charlottesville, VA 22904).  After the tour, which ends in the Office of Admission, please present your parking ticket for validation. We will provide parking validation (for up to three hours) after your information session/tour Monday through Friday.  Please note that there are times of the year when we will not be able to validate you for parking in this garage.  The calendar for the month of your visit (see below) will have instructions if this is not the case.  On home football game days, parking in the Central Grounds Garage is $10.  Please note that validation is only available on days when information session is conducted by one of the deans in the Office of Admission.  Parking validation guaranteed only when Office of Admission is open, typically M - F, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm.

Admission tours are given year-round, but are not available when classes are not in session (during exams, fall reading holidays, winter break, and spring recess). Please see the daily schedule below for complete times and locations.

SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT TOURS

Nursing School Tours
The School of Nursing will host tours by appointment only. All interested applicants and families need to call and give their name and the date they wish to have a tour in advance of their visit to be sure of availability. For more information contact the School of Nursing at 434-924-0141.

Engineering School Tours
The School of Engineering and Applied Science offers guided tours to prospective students and their families. Tours are available when classes are in session. When classes are in session (Fall/Spring semester), tours are offered Monday through Saturday at 1:00 pm. During the summer session (May 12th - Aug 8th), tours will be available Monday through Friday at 1:00 pm. All tours begin in the lobby of Thornton Hall. Tours will not be available during Fall Reading Days (Oct. 13-14), Thanksgiving recess (Nov. 26-30) or during exams/winter break (Dec. 6-Jan. 12). Registration is not required.  Summer tours begin on May 27th - M - F at 1:00 pm.

Commerce School Tours

The School of Commerce offers guided tours to prospective students and their families. Tours are offered when classes are in session (Fall/Spring) and are available on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays at 1:00 pm.   Please note that tours are not available during the summer or school breaks or during home football games.  Tours for this academic year will begin on Friday, January 23, 2009 and end on Friday, May 1, 2009.  The McIntire School of Commerce is located in Rouss & Robertson Halls on the East Lawn.  Visitors should enter Rouss Hall from the Lawn level (4th floor) and meet inside the entry lobby on the 4th floor.  Saturday tours will meet on the steps of Rouss Hall and not inside the building. The tours should last no more than 30 minutes.  Registration is not required. For more information, please call (434) 924-3485.

Architecture School Tours
The School of Architecture encourages interested students to visit and prefers that applicants call in advance of their visit to U.VA. For more information and to schedule a tour please call (434) 924-6442.

McIntire Department of Art Visits/Tours
The McIntire Department of Art in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University offers tours by appointment for interested students every Friday from 1:00 to 4:30 when classes are in session (Fall/Spring semesters only).  Please contact Millie Dean at 434-924-6123 to schedule a tour.

Department of Drama Visits/Tours
The Department of Drama in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University encourages interested students to visit and prefers that applicants call in advance of their visit to U.Va. For more Information and to schedule a tour call 434-924-3326.

McIntire Department of Music Visits/Tours
The McIntire Department of Music in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University encourages interested students to visit. Interested students and families should call in advance of their visit if possible. For more information call 434-924-3052.

Please note: Tours may not be available during final examinations, winter and summer recesses, and Information sessions may not be available on University holidays. To confirm location and availability, check this page often. We try to post changes and cancellations at least a month in advance.
