Note: Students applying to transfer as Second-years need not have completed all of the listed requirements. Students applying to transfer as Third-years should complete most if not all of listed pre-requisite coursework for the selected school.
College of Arts and Sciences
- English Composition (3)
- Foreign Languages - Demonstrated proficiency equal to the intermediate level of college instruction
- Natural Sciences and Mathematics (12) - Courses in at least two of the disciplines: astronomy, biology, chemistry, environmental sciences, physics, and mathematics. Math courses must include statistics, finite math calculus, or higher level-courses; pre-calculus will apply towards a degree but will not satisfy the requirement.
- Social Sciences (6) - Courses in anthropology, economics, government, linguistics, psychology, or sociology.
- Humanities (6) - One course in two of the following three groups: literature (classics, comparative literature, English, foreign literature): fine arts (art, drama, music); moral, philosophical, and religious thought (political theory, philosophy, religion).
- Historical Studies (3) - One course that is substantially historical, whether taught in a history department or in some other discipline.
- Non-Western Perspective (3) - One course from any department that deals substantially with a cultural heritage other than that of the West
- Important: Candidates with an associate's degree or two years of college coursework are preferred. Students transferring after one year of college should have completed at least 30 semester-hours; students transferring after two years should have completed at least 60 semester-hours. The College of Arts and Sciences will not grant credit for more than 60 semester-hours completed elsewhere.
School of Architecture
- English (6) - Recommended: at least one course in expository writing.
- Mathematics (3) - One course in calculus.
- Natural Sciences (6-8) - At least one course in physics.
- Social Sciences (6) - Courses in anthropology, economics, government, history, psychology, or sociology.
- Humanities or Sciences (12) - Courses in art, art history, computer science, drama, engineering, English (except composition), foreign languages, mathematics, music, natural sciences (in addition to those required above), philosophy, religion, speech.
- Other Requirements - Applicants to the program in urban and environmental planning should take elective courses in history, speech, economics, and state and local government. Applicants to the program in architectural history should take elective courses in history, art history, and foreign language. Other courses may be taken in a variety of fields; freehand drawing courses are recommended.
- Important: In evaluating applications, the School of Architecture considers evidence of interest in the profession. To insure normal progress towards the degree, transfer candidates are sometimes required to take summer courses at the University.
McIntire School of Commerce
- Elementary Accounting (6) - Financial and Managerial
- Principles of Economics (6) - Micro and Macro
- English Composition (3)
- Mathematics (6) - One course in statistics (descriptive and inferential) and one course in either calculus or probability.
- Humanities and Fine Arts (3) - One Course before enrollment. Two other courses - one in humanities, and one in social science, natural science, or physical science - are required before graduation and may be taken either before or after entering the McIntire School. A course in public speaking is strongly recommended.
- Foreign Languages - Varies. Demonstrated proficiency equal to the intermediate level of college instruction.
- Comm 180 - Introduction to business/computer useage course.
- Important: The McIntire School requires a minimum of 54 semester-hours of college work for admission. In addition to the general policies governing transfer of credit, the McIntire School will not award credits for independent study; business courses beyond the elementary courses in accounting and economics; or remedial courses.
Curry School of Education
BA/MT Program (Teacher Education)
- English Composition (3)
- Humanities (6) - One course in literature; one course in philosophy, religion, music, or fine arts
- Foreign Languages - Varies. Demonstrated proficiency equal to the intermediate level of college instruction.
- Natural Sciences and Mathematics (12) - Courses including one full-year sequence in natural sciences, with or without a lab, and one course in mathematics (statistics, probability, or calculus is recommended).
- Social Sciences (12) - One course in Western civilization; one course in American history; one course in non-Western studies; one course in psychology, sociology, anthropology, linguistics, or economics.
- Physical Education (1)
- Other Requirements - Remaining electives should be taken from any of the areas listed above.
- Important: All students wishing to prepare as teacher at elementary or secondary levels - including special education but excluding physical education (see below) must enroll in the College of Arts and Sciences in this five-year BA/MT program. Subsequent approval to enter the teacher-education program is granted by the School of Education prior to the student's entering the second or third year. A minimum of 23 semester-hours is required to transfer in the second year; 54 semester-hours are required to enter in the third year.
BSEd/MT Program (Physical Education)
- Requirements - The same requirements for the BA/MT program (see above) apply, with the exception of foreign language, which is not required.
- Important: the BSEd/MT program is teaching physical education enrolls students directly in the School of Education. A minimum of 24 semester-hours is required to transfer in the second year; 54 semester-hours are required to enter in the third year.
BSEd Program (Communication Disorders and Sports Medicine)
- Humanities (12) - One course in English Composition; one course in literature; other courses in any other humanities discipline.
- Social Sciences (12) - One course in American history; one course in introductory psychology; other courses in any other social-science discipline
- Natural Sciences and Mathematics (12) - At least two courses in a laboratory science, including biology; one course in mathematics.
- Health (3)
- Physical Education (1)
- Other requirements - Remaining electives should be chosen from any of the areas listed above.
- Important: Students transferring into communications disorder should consult the Undergraduate Record for additional requirements.
School of Engineering
- Calculus (8)
- Chemistry (4) - At least one course in calculus-based college chemistry
- Physics (4) - At least one course in calculus-based college physics
- English Composition (3)
- Computer Science (3) - A course in introductory computer programming, preferably in JAVA
- Other Requirements - Remaining courses may be in any area.
- Important: In evaluating the academic records of transfer candidates, the School of Engineering pays special attention to performance in mathematics and science courses.
School of Nursing
Traditional BSN Program
- English Composition (3)
- Second Writing Requirement (3) - One course, in addition to English composition, with extensive writing requirements. In most cases students will be required to take this course at the University.
- Natural Sciences and Mathematics (12) - Anatomy and physiology are required. Other courses in mathematics, chemistry, physics, genetics, environmental science, geology, ecology. Students considering graduate work are encouraged to take statistics.
- Social Science and History (9) - Acceptable courses include history, government, psychology, sociology, economics, western civilization, political science, and anthropology.
- Humanities and Fine Arts (9) - Acceptable courses include literature, philosophy, ethics, art, religion, music, drama, and foreign languages.
- Other Requirements - Fifteen or more semester-hours, bringing the total to 51. Up to 7 semester-hours (three courses) in physical education or skills courses such as studio art or music performance may be counted towards these elective requirements.
- Important: Student wishing to transfer after one or two years of college work must have successfully completed a minimum of at least 30 semester-hours of the requirements listed above. Students will enter the School of Nursing in the fall semester second-year students unless they apply to one of the nontraditional programs below.
Non-traditional Nursing Programs
RN/BSN. Registered nurses who have completed the required general education courses listed above may apply for transfer admission to a program which leads to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Students holding a bachelor's degree in another major may apply for transfer admission to an innovative program leading to a Master's Degree in nursing. More information can be obtained from the nursing web site. |
