Looking Ahead: What’s Next at U.Va.6/6/09 - This is a recording from Reunions Weekend 2009 at the University of Virginia, made possible by the University's Office of Engagement. On June 6, 2009, top officials at the University discusses some of the critical issues facing the University’s academic and student life, and talked about some of UVA's plans for the future. The panel consists of: Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Leonard Sandridge; Executive Vice President and Provost Dr. Arthur T. Garson; and Vice President and Chief Student Affairs Officer Pat Lampkin. The panel is moderated by Assistant Vice President for Public Affairs Carol Wood.

Abraham Lincoln and William Shakespeare 2/23/09 - WILLIAM LEE MILLER is Scholar in Ethics and Institutions at the Miller Center. From 1992 until his 1999 retirement, he was Thomas C. Sorensen Professor of Political and Social Thought and Director of the Program in Political and Social Thought at U.Va. A speechwriter for Adlai Stevenson's 1956 presidential campaign and a contributing editor and writer for The Reporter magazine, he was the founding director of the Poynter Center on American Institutions at Indiana University. He is the author of eight books, including Lincoln's Virtues: An Ethical Biography (Knopf, 2002). |

Infrastructure 2/21/09 - America's infrastructure is in grave disrepair. Analysts have determined that one-third of the nation's roads are in poor or mediocre condition, and the Federal Highway Administration recently estimated that one out of every four bridges is either structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. Every infrastructure sector, from rail, air and seaways, to water supply, sewage and irrigation, to energy pipelines and the electric grid, are in need of significant capital. British Ambassador Sir Nigel Sheinwald Speaks on International Relations 2/13/09 - Sir Nigel Sheinwald, Great Britain's ambassador to the United States, spoke in the Dome Room at the Rotunda Feb. 13 on international relations. His talk was free and open to the public. Following his address there was a discussion of his remarks, led by U.Va. history professor Philip Zelikow, former executive director of the 9/11 Commission and former counselor of the U.S. Department of State, and David A. Leblang, the J. Wilson Newman Professor of Governance & Professor of Politics. |
