Scotland and America: Lessons from the Land of Jefferson

4/1/08 - Alex Salmond, First Minister of Scotland, speaks in the Rotunda Dome Room. Salmond's visit marks the 10th anniversary of a United States Senate resolution noting America's Declaration of Independence was inspired in part by the 14th-century Scottish Declaration of Arbroath. Salmond is touring the United States to promote Scotland Week, which starts March 30 and showcases Scotland's academic, business and cultural contributions to the world. He also plans stops in Boston, New York City and Washington.

The Secret History of the War on Cancer

3/20/08 - Devra Davis is Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. A National Book Award Finalist for When Smoke Ran Like Water: Tales of Environmental Deception and the Battle Against Pollution (Basic Books, 2004), she has written more than 170 scientific publications and edited 11 books. Davis has held advisory roles in national and international agencies including the World Health Organization, and has received numerous awards for her work in environmental health. Here she speaks at the Miller Center of Public Affairs on March 20.

Alice Roosevelt Longworth: From White House Princess to Washington Power Broker

3/17/08 - Historian Stacy A. Cordery is the author of three books on the Roosevelts. She taught at East Carolina University after earning her Ph.D. in U.S. history in 1992. Now a full professor at Monmouth College, she teaches modern U.S. history, women's history, and interdisciplinary studies. Cordery has volunteered in several capacities for H-Net (www.h-net.org) and is the web bibliographer for the National First Ladies Library.

New York Environmental Justice Advocate Majora Carter Gives Annual Howland Lecture

3/14/08 - Majora Carter, founder and executive director of Sustainable South Bronx, a New York City organization dedicated to advancing the environmental and economic rebirth of the South Bronx, gave the University of Virginia's Benjamin C. Howland Jr. Memorial Lecture on Friday, March 14. The lecture, titled "Green the Ghetto: Why, How, and What Happens if We Don't," was hosted at 5 p.m. in Minor Hall.
