The Health Care Crisis: Contours of the Debate3/10/08 - Arthur Garson, Jr. is Executive Vice President and Provost of the University of Virginia, and the Robert C. Taylor Professor of Health Science and Public Policy. He became Vice President and Dean of U.Va.'s School of Medicine in 2002. Garson has served as President of the American College of Cardiology (1999-2000), and as chair of the National Advisory Council for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. He treats children with heart disease in his medical practice. Carolyn L. Engelhard is Assistant Professor of Medical Education and a health policy analyst in the Department of Public Health Sciences at U.Va.'s School of Medicine. Director of the Master of Science program in clinical research, she is a consultant for state health and Medicaid agencies. This Forum is a prelude to the Miller Center's National Discussion and Debate Series' debate on the health care crisis on April 9 in Boston. Miller Center Debate: Religion in the Public Square3/6/08 - On Thursday, Mar. 6, 2008, in Richmond, Va., the National Discussion and Debate Series examined the role of religion in the public square. Four participants debated the resolution: "Religion should have no place in politics or government."
Rev. Barry Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, and Jacques Berlinerblau, associate professor and director of the Program for Jewish Civilization at Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, spoke in favor of the resolution. Chuck Colson, founder and chairman of Prison Fellowship Ministries, and Bishop Harry Jackson, senior pastor of Hope Christian Church, argued against it. Evan Thomas, editor at large of Newsweek, moderated. |

U.Va. Introductory Politics Class Gets a Guest Lecture from Sen. Hillary Clinton 2/11/08 - Senator Hillary Clinton made a visit to Grounds to visit politics professor Larry Sabato's popular class entitled "PLAP 101: An Introduction to American Politics" on the eve of the Virginia primary. She also fielded questions from Sabato's students, who filled the orchestra section in the jammed auditorium. |
