ResourcesEducational SeminarsEducational seminars are available to both students and staff members of the University. While most programs are presented at the request of the individual or organization, there are certain programs scheduled in advance by the police department that are open to the community. Seminars are available on the following safety and security topics: General safety and security, alcohol awareness, illegal drugs, hazing, sexual assault prevention, driving under the influence, and self defense. Rape Aggression Defense Classes (R.A.D.)University of Virginia Police Officers instruct classes in self-defense not only for female students, faculty, and staff, but for females in the community. The program deals with escapes, physical attacks, personal awareness,risk avoidance, community assistance, and procedures for prosecution. The class is four weeks long with one 3 hr class per week. Instructors use the Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) System to teach self-defense. The Women's center is currently hosting a class. For more information, contact Lisa Speidel at las7p@virginia.edu. The Police Department will host a class that will be held on the following dates: January 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th. The class is from 1700 hours until 2000 hours at Runk Green Room. For more information, please contact Officer Tabler at tabler@virginia.edu Basic Self Defense InstructionIf there is a group of individuals (male and female) who would like to have basic self defense instruction and cannot commit to a full class contact tabler@virginia.edu for more information. Security SurveysThis program consists of crime prevention officers performing evaluations of buildings or areas and providing recommendations for the improvement of security in those locations. These surveys are provided on request. Departmental goals call for the provision of 2 to 4 security surveys per month. Third Party Sexual Assault ReportingProgramThis program allows sexual assault survivors who do not want to make an official report to make confidential anonymous reports concerning their assaults. These reports are used for informational purposes by the police department in planning directed patrol and providing warnings to students and staff when appropriate. Blue Light PhonesThere are more than 400 blue light phone in place around the University of Virginia. Telephones are in every dormitory, along frequently traveled sidewalks, and in parking lots. Some academic buildings also have phones. These phone dial directly into the University Police department. If you need assistance, just activate a blue phone and state the problem.
