Yellow Cab Ride Program:
The UVa Police Department in cooperation with the Dean of
Student's Office sponsors a program for students who find themselves
in situations where they need a cab but do not have the money
to pay. Students with a valid student I.D. may sign a "chit"
for a taxi ride. The bill is then paid by the Office of the Dean
of Student's. Students using the service then reimburse the Dean's
Office at a later time. In this way students who may have to travel
alone at night, or who may have had too much to drink, can get
home safely even if they do not have the cost of the cab ride
with them.

Educational Seminars: Educational seminars are available to both students and
staff members of the University. While most programs are presented
at the request of the individual or organization, there are certain
programs scheduled in advance by the police department that are
open to the community. Seminars are available on the following
safety and security topics: General safety and security, alcohol
awareness, illegal drugs, hazing, sexual assault prevention, driving
under the influence, and self defense.
Security Surveys: This program consists
of crime prevention officers performing evaluations of buildings
or areas and providing recommendations for the improvement of
security in those locations. These surveys are provided on request.
Departmental goals call for the provision of 2 to 4 security surveys
per month.
Rape Aggression Defense Classes: University of
Virginia Police Officers instruct classes in self-defense no only
for students, faculty, and staff, but for people from the community.
The program deals with escapes, physical attacks, personal awareness,
risk avoidance, community assistance, and procedures for prosecution.
The classes last 12 hours, broken down into 3 hour blocks per
day. Instructors use the Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) System
to teach self-defense.
Third Party Sexual Assault Reporting
Program: This program allows sexual assault survivors
who do not want to make an official report to make confidential
anonymous reports concerning their assaults. These reports are
used for informational purposes by the police department in planning
directed patrol and providing warnings to students and staff when
appropriate.
Blue Light Phones: There are more than
200 blue light phone in place around the University of Virginia.
Telephones are in every dormitory, along frequently traveled sidewalks,
and in parking lots. Some academic buildings also have phones.
These phone dial directly into the University Police department.
If you need assistance, just activate a blue phone and state the
problem. A police officer will respond.
