Encyclopedia Virginia Database and Web Application Programmer

Criteria:
The Virginia Foundation for the Humanities seeks a programmer with extensive knowledge of relational database development and design (MySQL), XML and related technologies (particularly XPath and XSLT), JavaScript, and scripting languages (PHP and PERL) to support Encyclopedia Virginia (EV) and its management and publication of content. Designed to be the first and ultimate point of reference for information about Virginia, EV chronicles and explores the state’s history and culture and interprets the state’s significance to the citizens of Virginia, the nation, and the world. The preferred candidate will have demonstrated a wide range of competencies that include experience designing applications in a LAMP environment; integrating XML content with relational databases; developing and customizing content management and publishing applications with MySQL and PHP; and using PHP:XSL to transform XML for web delivery. Experience with Subversion or other versioning systems for software deployment is also a plus. The successful candidate must be able to work independently to detect and debug technical problems and to develop tightly integrated applications that are as secure as they are robust. Working with editorial staff, the candidate must also familiarize him or herself with the stages of content workflow and the needs of editorial staff, and based on those needs help decide upon development priorities.

Description:
This position entails a combination of tasks such as analyzing and assessing technical/system requirements to meet the needs of editorial staff; designing, documenting, and maintaining databases and writing and modifying scripts for content management on the backend; and developing and documenting applications for the integration and delivery of content with a variety of data types on the frontend. To be competitive, applicants should have a Bachelor’s degree and demonstrable work experience developing database and web applications (a degree in computer science or similar field is not necessary so long as the candidate’s work experience confirms aptitude and knowledge). The successful candidate should also be able to work well within a collaborative environment.
