UVA TO GO: The newest way to get information from the University of Virginia.

UVA TO GO is a new service being developed by the Web Communications Office in University Relations. It allows users to access news releases from Top News Daily, Headline News, and selected calendar events, including athletics, films, exhibits, and performances wherever they go.

When news and events are published daily on the U.Va.'s Things To Do/Newsstand Web page, the same information is fed to: (1) the U.Va. home page; (2) Web-enabled handhelds; and (3) RSS feeds for news readers and RSS-enabled browsers.

The service is currently in a testing phase. Please take this survey to help us evaluate this service and determine the best applications for it.

For more information on how this works, please read this.

1. Handhelds: URL: http://www.uvatogo.net

If you have a Web-enabled handheld, such as a Blackberry, a Palm Pilot, Pocket PC, or web-enabled cell phone, you can get information from the University's home page at http://www.uvatogo.net.

If you don't have a Web-enabled handheld you can use this emulator to get a general idea of what it is like.

2. Home Page: The U.Va. home page expands on the bottom where the same information is displayed. You can catch the latest news and events on the home page by clicking on this feature.

3. RSS Page: In addition to viewing these feeds from the expanded home page and Web-enabled handhelds, you can also use these RSS feeds as "live bookmarks" in your Web browser or with news readers. "Live bookmarks" is a new feature in Firefox 1.0. The live bookmarks allow you to view news headlines and events in the bookmarks toolbar. When the RSS feed updates, your bookmark updates at increments set by the browser to match automatically, no need to refresh the page. Want to read a story? Just click the bookmark to go straight to that item saving you time and mouse clicks. To see more information, please visit http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/livebookmarks.html

The live bookmarks in Firefox look like the image below (click to enlarge). A site is enabled for Live Bookmarks if it shows this icon in the bottom right corner of the Firefox browser window .

You can add capabilities similar to Firefox's Live Bookmarks to Internet Explorer by installing a browser plugin. For example, if you add the free RSS plugin Pluck to IE on your PC, you can create and manage live bookmarks and even receive alerts when new content is posted. To see a more complete selection of plugins, visit http://allrss.com/rssreaders.html. Download one of these plugins and then add the RSS feed http://www.uvatogo.net/uvatogo.rss. Many sites that provide RSS feeds for bookmarking will display this icon . Look for it if you want to find other RSS feeds.
