Meeting Summary:
This was the first meeting of the Fine and Performing Arts Planning Commission. Bob
Chapel presented the background for forming the planning commissions, the scope and the
process he envisions for the work of this commission, possible topics for a national
conference, and the status of the feasibility study for the arts precinct. Mr. Chapel
suggested that much of the commissions work can be conducted through smaller
sub-groups with periodic reports back to the entire commission. Mr. Chapel invited
commission members to suggest questions and issues that it might investigate. More than
twenty ideas emerged from this discussion. The next commission meeting will be February 16
at 7:30 A.M.; the final spring meeting will be on May 4, not May 18 as previously
announced.
Discussion topics:
- Background for forming the Fine and Performing Arts Planning Commission
- Programs and Departments to be included in the commissions work
- Process and procedures
- Potential travel to visit facilities and programs
- Possibility of bringing in experts to address the commission
- National conference on the fine and performing arts
- Information to gather and questions to ask
- Ideas about forming sub-groups
Actions to be taken:
Mr. Chapel asked the commission members to consider possible topics and speakers for a
national conference. He also asked Joan Fry to gather information on the number of majors
in the various arts programs, the numbers of graduate students enrolled, and information
on course demand (e.g., class sizes, numbers of students closed out of courses,
enrollments that force departments to add sections, courses students desire but which
departments cannot teach, etc.).
