The Vice Provost for International Programs (VPIP) of the University reports to and assists the Provost in directing U.Va.'s international programs. This office oversees the International Studies Office, including its programs for study abroad, and provides support for international students and scholars. In addition, VPIP will have a central role in strengthening the University's connections with universities abroad, hosting international delegations, representing U.Va. in a variety of international settings and internationalizing student life on the Grounds, in both extracurricular and curricular offerings.
Under the leadership of Gowher Rizvi, an internationally renowned political scientist and former director of the Ash Institute for Democratic Governance and Innovation at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, VPIP seeks to enhance the University's global impact. U.Va.'s strategy for global education involves both taking U.Va. to the world and bringing the world to the Grounds of U.Va. in order to build knowledge that encompasses global perspectives and insights from multiple disciplines.
In our day, globalization has a profound impact on the way in which we conduct research and build knowledge. U.Va. understands that scholars can no longer work in isolation. That is why the University is committed to building knowledge through a two-way exchange of experience and information and through collaborative research based on mutual respect between scholars and institutions from multiple countries and disciplinary perspectives. VPIP contributes to the development of intellectual capital in an international context as it seeks to:
- Change the lives of students by making them global citizens who are equipped to deal with the complexities of an interconnected world.
- Change the way faculty teach and build knowledge.
- Change the world by providing solutions to challenges facing us in the twenty-first century.
