Tom Leonard


Tom Leonard is the Director for the Office of Environmental Health and Safety. As Director, Dr. Leonard is responsible for leading a team of environmental health and safety professionals in the support of University research, teaching, patient care care and administrative activities. Tom earned his Ph.D. in Environmental Health from Temple University and his B.S. in Public Health from West Chester University. Before coming to UVa in 2003, Tom served as Safety Director of the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia.

Tom also holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Public Health Sciences where he serves the teaching and training programs of the University of Virginia’s School of Medicine. His research interests include occupationally acquired infections, laboratory safety, and methods of bioaerosol collection and analysis. Leonard serves on the Editorial Board of the journal Applied Biosafety and is a Certified Biological Safety Professional and Certified Safety Professional.
