Distinguished Young Investigator Grant Program
As part of the University's 2020 Science and Technology initiative, the Office of the Vice President for Research administers the Fund for Excellence in Science and Technology (FEST) internal grant program for junior faculty research projects in the sciences, engineering, and medicine by providing awards of $50,000 annually for highly innovative research projects that will lead to strong proposals for outside funding and early career recognition.
The FEST Distinguished Young Investigator Grant program is open to junior faculty members (tenure track and non-tenure track) in the first three years of their appointment (that is, appointments starting Fall 2008 for July 2011 awards) from science and engineering departments in the College of Arts & Sciences, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, and the School of Medicine. The 2011 deadline was February 25th.
FEST Eligibility and Guidelines
Junior faculty members (tenure track and non-tenure track) in the first three years of their appointments (that is, appointments beginning Fall 2008 for July 2011 awards) from science and engineering departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, and the School of Medicine are eligible.
The VPR standing review committee will review applications and make funding recommendations to the VPR.
The review committee will use the following criteria: outstanding and innovative science and engineering research program, more venturesome than otherwise possible at early career stage; capability of applicant; likelihood of outside funding or recognition.
FEST support is not meant to substitute for external funding, but rather to enable U.Va.'s most innovative junior faculty members to be stronger competitors for the most distinguished outside early career funding awards.
Proposal form: The FEST Distinguished Young Investigator Grant proposal form (in Microsoft Word format) can be downloaded here. The proposal package will include a proposal form, a two page CV, and a department chair nomination letter.
Submitting proposals: Send proposals to Jeffrey Plank, Associate Vice President for Research, with a copy to Mollie Iseli.
