In
keeping with the Office of Graduate Student Diversity Programs’ mission
of enhancing the diversity of the graduate student population at the
University of Virginia, it hosted a graduate student
visitation weekend from March 12-15, 2009. The aim of the weekend was to serve as a resource
for administration and academic units by attracting a mass of accepted
graduate students from diverse populations to the University of
Virginia. Over the course of the weekend the office
created an environment that was both welcoming and supportive of
diverse graduate students’ academic and personal lives. By hosting an
academic conference during the visitation weekend, the office sought to
highlight the academic strengths of the current graduate student body
and potential faculty advisors. The overall combination of academic,
departmental, and cultural activities assured students that the
University of Virginia will be the best choice for them to pursue their
graduate studies.
