The Internet provides a valuable tool for observing behavior, but there is a question as to what a user’s expectation of privacy is and what space is private and public. For educators, the Internet is an important tool to use in the classroom and it is vital to study its use but it also presents some dangers to participants, especially children and adolescents.  The Internet can also be an effective method for collecting data, particularly surveys; however, researchers should be aware of loopholes that may compromise participant confidentiality. In additon, make sure that your methods for collecting and storing data comply with UVa's IT Services policies and procedures.
