Choosing the Right IRB: SBS vs. HSR

In general, IRB-SBS reviews social and behavioral sciences research and the IRB-HSR reviews health sciences research. However, there are times when “social and behavioral sciences research” looks a lot like “health sciences research” and vice versa. In general, if there is any element of the study that is medically invasive or required medical recorded data, the study needs to be reviewed by the IRB-HSR. This divide insures that studies are reviewed by the board that has the best expertise for examining the study. The IRB-SBS and IRB-HSR developed an algorithm for determining what studies go where; if you are not sure where your study fits, please contact an IRB office first before you apply.
