SBS Guide for Researchers

Guide :: Abuse :: Suicide Threat :: Protocol

Protocol and Consent Form Additions

Protocol:

  • If your research focuses on at-risk adults who may be more likely to express suicidal intentions, you will need to demonstrate your experience in working with these participants, which can be done in 8c.
  • In 21 of the protocol, give specific detail about the procedures you will have in place for handling a suicide threat.

Consent Form:

Reporting a suicide threat requires a breach of confidentiality. If the methods used in your research increase the likelihood of discovering of a threat, the Board may ask that you add the following statement to your consent form under “Confidentiality”:

Confidentiality (please modify so that it is appropriate for the participants’ reading level): I have ethical obligations to contact individuals to help you if you should threaten to harm yourself.  If keeping information obtained in this study private would immediately put you in danger, I will release that information to protect you.
