SBS Guide for Researchers

Guide :: Informed Consent :: Special Consent :: Abuse

Concerns about abuse, illegal behaviors, Certificate of Confidentiality

Studies that are likely to recruit participants who are in abusive situations or who engage in illegal behaviors have additional concerns regarding consent processes.  Researchers do not have legal privilege to protect their participants from subpoenas, which can thus be a risk for these participants.  A Certificate of Confidentiality helps to protect participants by providing some level of legal privilege.  For a complete explanation of these situations in research, including information about consent, please see Abuse.  For information about how to apply for a Certificate of Confidentiality and to address Certificate of Confidentiality language in a consent form, please see the Certificate of Confidentiality section.
