Exemption
The writers of the federal regulations mandating IRB review (CFR 45.46) recognized that not all research rises to the level of full board review. In some cases, a protocol needs IRB approval but the level of risk in the protocol is considered minimal and it can be expedited (for more information, please see the Expedited section). Some protocols fit specific categories designated for exemption; these categories imply that the protocol is also “minimal risk” and certain aspects of the studies do not require the Board’s continuous review.
