What is the review process for the Grant Approval?
The Grant Approval materials are reviewed by the IRB-SBS Director and the IRB-SBS Chair; the Grant Approval receives its official approval at a full board meeting. The initial review by the Director and Chair can take up to 7 business days; the IRB-SBS staff also needs a few days prior to the full board meeting to make and distribute the agenda to the Board. If you need to have your Grant Approval reviewed by a certain meeting, we recommend that you submit your materials two weeks prior to the meeting date. Please see SBS Meeting Schedule for meeting dates. Your Grant Approval will be placed in the first available IRB-SBS meeting depending on when it is received in our office. Please do not wait to submit your grant review because we cannot accommodate last minute reviews. On the Grant Approval Form, there is a line where you can indicate the date that the grant is due; we will do our best to return your grant before this date but we cannot make guarantees. Most funding organizations will accept IRB-SBS grant approvals after your grant application has been submitted for review.
After your grant approval materials have been reviewed and approved, the IRB-SBS office will issue an official approval form. As mentioned previously, this approval is a preliminary approval for the purposes of obtaining grants. You will need to submit a research protocol to receive full IRB approval to conduct human subject research. The IRB-SBS office will check each year to see if there are any active protocols associated with the approved grant. If there are no active protocols, a determination will be made as to potential future funding. If the grant is not likely to be funded, the IRB-SBS will terminate its approval.
