Pre-Review
The SBS staff acts as a triage station for the incoming protocols. Your protocol will be assigned to a pre-reviewer, who will work with you to make sure that the protocol submission is complete and all of the questions have been answered fully. The pre-reviewer will send emails to you about any changes that need to be made before it can be reviewed by a Board member or the full board. Please only resubmit documents that you have changed. The pre-reviewer will attempt to help you pinpoint any areas that may be problematic in the Board review and clarify areas that have missing information. As part of the review, the pre-reviewer will assess whether the protocol should be sent to the full board (full board review) or if it can be reviewed by a Board member (expedited/ exempt review).
The decision to send a protocol to the full board or through the expedited review process is not always clear-cut. As research is always evolving, we are sometimes encountered with questions never pursued before or issues that may need more deliberation. A protocol that is sent to the full board can still be granted exemption or receive expedited review status for future reviews.
Please note that you should not depend on the pre-reviewer to be your editor. Sending documents that are poorly written will only be returned to you with a recommendation for better proofreading. The IRB-SBS expects to receive professional-level documents.
