The Office of the Vice President for Research supports several research funding programs, including interim lab support and the Fund for Excellence in Science and Technology (FEST). FEST supports our most creative junior faculty members at the very beginning of their careers.
In partnership with the College of Arts and Sciences, VPR provides research funding in the humanities, social sciences, and the arts. VPR also has established a fellowship enhancement fund to strengthen the ability of all academic units to recruit top graduate students, and a post-graduate enhancement program to assist with a wide range of post-doc administrative issues.
With the assistance of an internal review committee of faculty researchers, VPR also coordinates limited submission proposals to federal agencies and private foundations.
The office provides matching funds for federal instrumentation and equipment grants, emergency interim support for laboratories that have temporarily lost their extramural funding source and several other internal grant programs.
The VPR solicits nominations annually for the Distinguished Scientist Award. This new award recognizes faculty from the basic, medical or engineering sciences who have performed a considerable amount of influential research while at the University of Virginia. Nominees are judged on publications, awards, peer reviews, and having made a major impact upon a field of study, both nationally and internationally. The award consists of a $10,000 one-time contribution to the recipient's laboratory for enhancement of its research activities.
VPR also supports implementation of the Board of Visitors (BOV) Research Enhancement Plan for U.Va. to achieve international pre-eminence as a research institution in select science and technology fields.
The University of Virginia Office of Economic Development works closely with the business community to build relationships between University researchers and high technology businesses. The office is also responsible for tenant/university relations at the University's research parks.
