Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies

Dr. R. Ariel Gomez, Professor of Pediatrics and Biology, is the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies. He is responsible for the University's research compliance, research enhancement, graduate/postdoctoral programs and intellectual property. Dr. Gomez serves on the Boards of the UVA Patent Foundation and the UVA Foundation as well as on the Virginia Research and Technology Advisory Board.

Retaining close working ties to the research community, Dr. Gomez also serves as Director of the NIH-supported Center of Excellence in Pediatric Nephrology. His research pursues an understanding of the basic mechanisms of kidney development. He is the author of numerous scientific articles as well as being a reviewer for nearly twenty other journals. He has served on numerous grant review committees including the Cardiovascular and Renal NIH Study Section and was a member of two NIH Task Forces that identified the research needs of children and adults with renal diseases.

Dr. Gomez was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and received his B.S. degree from Instituto "Lomas de Zamora" and M.D. from the University of Buenos Aires School of Medicine in 1975. He subsequently completed fellowships in Pediatric Nephrology at the University of Iowa and the University of California at San Francisco. Dr. Gomez joined the U.Va. Faculty in 1984.
