Compliance Training

Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) & Office of Animal Welfare

  1. Animal Research Orientation Seminar- mandatory (3 hrs, in person, usually 1/month)
  2. Online training through the Laboratory Animal Training Assoc (LATA)- mandatory for listed species

  3. Rodent Survival Surgery CD- mandatory for those performing surgery with rodents
  4. Online training modules through U.Va.- mandatory for work with frogs
  5. Workshops on specific topics (Rodent Handling Workshop, 3 hr in person 1/month) (Protocol Writing Workshop/offered quarterly) (NIH Tutorial on writing an animal research proposal) (Individualized training)
  6. Working Safely with nonhuman primates- Mandatory for people using nonhuman primates- video

BioSafety Training

  1. Bloodborne Pathogen and Biosafety Training for Research Personnel- mandatory- 1.5 hours.  For people working with human or primate derived materials, refresher required each year, online. http://keats.admin.virginia.edu/bio/home.cfm

  2. Shipping Infectious Substances and Diagnostic Specimens Class- University personnel who ship infectious substances including diagnostic specimens, microorganisms, human-derived materials, etc. must complete a training program and pass a final exam. 2 hr. class. http://keats.admin.virginia.edu/bio/Shipping_Classes_2005.doc

Institutional Review Board for Health Sciences Research (HSR & SBS)

As of January 2007, the CITI Program satisfies UVA's IRB online training requirement for investigators involved in human subject research.  At UVA, investigators involved in human subject research are required to take online training once every three years.
