ACUC Welcomes New Chair

The University of Virginia’s Animal Care Use Committee (ACUC) is pleased to announce the appointment of William (Bill) Sutherland, Ph.D., as our new Chair.  This three year appointment is effective July 1, 2006 and continues until June 30, 2009.

Dr. Sutherland received his Ph.D. in developmental biology from U.Va. in 1977.  Since then he has held a variety of research-focused positions at U.Va. within the School of Medicine.  He is currently a Professor of Research in the Department of Cell Biology.  He also serves as Associate Director of the Lymphocyte Culture Center, a core facility of the U.Va. School of Medicine and the Cancer Center that provides research support to over 100 laboratories each year.  In addition, Dr. Sutherland is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for EluSys Therapeutics, Inc. in Pine Brook, New Jersey.

Dr. Sutherland has served on the ACUC since 1999.  His work and research experiences have given him a comprehensive understanding of the complex issues impacting the care and use of animals in research.  We are honored to have him as our Chair and look forward to his leadership and insight.

Satellite Clinics Offered

The ACUC is pleased to announce that it will be offering two satellite clinics per month for employees to obtain their annual animal handler occupational health assessments. This will start in December 2006 and the satellite clinics will generally be offered on the second Thursday and third Wednesday of each month. Employees may still obtain their annual occupational health assessments at the Fontaine UVA WorkMed location at any time. Please call 3-0076 to schedule appointments.
(Note: All initial occupational health assessments for employees must be done at the Fontaine UVA WorkMed location. Students must always use the Elson Student Health Center.)
