Special Consent Situations
In most studies, the basic consent scenario should suffice for adult participants. However, researchers don’t just study normal adults, so alternate consent procedures have been developed to accommodate other groups of participants. Some of these groups include “vulnerable populations” such as children and prisoners. In multi-cultural situations, forms may be needed to accommodate various language needs, or forms may not be appropriate at all. The following sections will provide general guidance for developing appropriate consent procedures; if you have further questions regarding your specific situation, please contact our office. Also, this section is supplemental to the Basic Consent Scenario section; if you haven’t already read the section, please take a moment to do so.
