The primary function of the IRB-SBS is to ensure compliance with federal and University regulations for non-medical, behavioral research involving human participants (studies which are considered medically non-invasive). The Board is dedicated to helping the University of Virginia researcher conduct research that protects human subjects and is compliant with the federal regulations. The IRB-SBS has provided Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to guide both the researcher and the IRB-SBS in conducting and approving research involving human subjects.
The IRB-SBS Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) assure that the risks of research conducted at UVA are compatible with the expected benefits, and that participants always have a free and fully informed choice before giving their consent to participate. These ethical principals, which were described in the Nuremberg Code, the Helsinki Agreement, and the Belmont Report, are formalized in the Code of Federal Regulations Title 45, Part 46. The federal agency responsible for administering this program is the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), through their Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP). These documents, as well as guidance from OHRP, provide the foundation and framework for the SOPs.
