Patricia M. Lampkin was named Vice President and Chief Student Affairs Officer at the University of Virginia in October of 2002. She oversees the following areas that provide programming and services to undergraduate students: Office of African-American Affairs, Office of the Dean of Students, Department of Student Health, University Career Services, and WTJU radio station. Prior to being named vice president, Ms. Lampkin served as interim vice president for 15 months, and prior to that, associate vice president for student affairs for six years. During the 2000-01 academic year, she devoted her full-time energies to the University's long-range planning initiative, Virginia 2020. Her study and research have resulted in a report on the Student Experience 2020, which is available at: http://www.virginia.edu/vpsa/2020.html.

 

A native of Decatur, Illinois, Ms. Lampkin began her career with the University in 1979. In 1987 she was promoted to associate dean of students responsible for residence life. She also served as the University's compliance officer for the Americans with Disabilities Act from 1991 to 2000. She is the recipient of several awards from the University community, including the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award in 2005; the Elizabeth Zintl Leadership Award in 1998; the Raven Award in 1995; the IMP Distinguished Faculty Award in 1994; the Ernest H. Ern Award, presented by Student Council in 1988; and the Dean's Dissertation Research Award in 1984.

 

An adjunct professor in the Curry School of Education's Center for the Study of Higher Education, Ms. Lampkin teaches a graduate course on the organization and administration of student affairs programs. She also teaches an undergraduate seminar on honor and ethics, an area of special interest stemming from her involvement with the University's student-run honor system. She is the co-author of Mountains and Passes: Traversing the Landscape of Ethics and Student Affairs Administration. In 2000 the University of Vermont presented her with the Salva Dignitate ("With Dignity Uncompromised") Award, which honors alumni who are exceptional educators and leaders in times of change.

 

Ms. Lampkin earned her doctorate of education from the University of Virginia in 1986. She holds a master's degree in student personnel services in higher education from the University of Vermont. As an undergraduate, she studied at Marian College in Indianapolis where she earned a bachelor's degree in special education. She is married and has two children.
