Subject: Please celebrate safely and responsibly

For many students, this weekend will be a chance to celebrate before classes end and exams begin. Please plan to be safe and to be responsible.

If you attend the Foxfield Races, you will notice a dramatic increase in law enforcement over previous years. As you know, this is not a U.Va.-sponsored event. The three agencies increasing their presence at the event – the Virginia State Police, the Virginia Department of Alcohol Beverage Control, and the Albemarle County Police – are taking this measure because of numerous disturbances and instances of illegal, dangerous and offensive behavior that have occurred in the past. These three agencies have said they will be monitoring the crowd even more closely this year and more aggressively apprehending those who engage in illegal or dangerous activities.

I urge you to think about your safety and that of your friends during this time:

Getting Medical Help
Above all, please seek medical attention when needed. Do not leave a friend to “sleep it off.” Nothing matters more than the safety of yourself and your friends. Physicians from the U.Va. Hospital’s Emergency Room, who are accustomed to helping students, will be staffing the First Aid Station at Foxfield (it will be located next to the airplane hangar at the West Gate).

Transportation
Public transportation will be available on Saturday to travel safely between Grounds and Foxfield. No one should take the risk of drinking and driving. Charlottesville Transportation Services (CTS) buses will run on 15-minute schedules before and after the races. More details:
Cost: $10 roundtrip (or one-way)
Pick-up and drop-off points on Grounds:
• Scott Stadium (to the right near the parking lot entrance)
• McCormick Road near the Chapel
• The Park, near the JAG School
Times:
• 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (to Foxfield)
• 4 to 7 p.m. (return to Grounds)

We care about you. Please make sure your chance to celebrate does not end in tragedy or regrets. Be responsible and be safe.
