Re: Welcome new U.Va. parents

Dear Parents of New Transfer Students:

Welcome to the University of Virginia community. As your daughter or son prepares to transfer into the University, the coming year promises change, excitement, and the start of a new chapter for your family.

Summer Orientation marks the beginning of this transition for you and your daughter or son. We look forward to introducing you to the many unique aspects of the University and to answering any questions or concerns. Please plan to participate in one of the two Orientation sessions for parents of transfer students (either July 19 or 20, depending on your student's school) so you can learn more about the University and the student experience. The deadline to register is June 1, and your student is responsible for the registration process. We invite both students' parents to participate, although seating may be limited for some sessions. Beyond Orientation, we look forward to your involvement in programs planned especially for parents and family members. Family Weekend, programs and activities in your region sponsored by UVaClubs, athletic events, travel programs, publications, and the University's website all offer avenues for you to stay informed about the University of Virginia and become an active part of this community.

As you and your student prepare to join this community, please note the following:

E-mail addresses: We have received parents' e-mail addresses from the admission application that your daughter or son submitted. If step-parents or other extended family members would like to sign up for e-mail notifications about student life, they can do so by filling out this form. Periodic messages from me highlight health and safety issues, remind you about key dates, such as flu immunization clinics, and summarize other topics that may be of special interest.

Daily news from the University: If you would like to receive a daily e-mail with news updates from the University, please go to the UVAToday website and click on the orange "Sign Up" link at the bottom of the page.

Emergency updates: As a reminder, you can always visit the University's main website for the most up-to-date information on activities and events on the Grounds. In times of emergency or inclement weather, the home page will be updated frequently. Your daughter or son also can sign you up for text alerts. More details are on the U.VA. Alerts website.

Athletic events: The University welcomes the participation of both students and parents at sporting events. More information on how to obtain tickets is available in a letter from Athletics Director Craig Littlepage, posted on the Virginia Cavaliers website.

Key deadlines and dates:

• May 25: Transfer students apply for on-Grounds housing, if they wish.
  
• June 1: Deadline for students to register themselves and their parents for Summer Orientation.
  
• July 6: Dining plan contract due (optional for transfers).
  
• July 19: Student and parent Orientation for students transferring as third-years into the College of Arts & Sciences or the School of Nursing.
  
• July 20: Student and parent Orientation for students transferring as second-years into the College.
  
• Throughout the summer: Summer send-off parties in various cities for new students and parents. Please see the UVaClubs' Student Send-Offs page.
  
• August 16: Payment due for tuition and fees.
  
• August 24 or August 25: Students move into their residence halls (as assigned).
  
• August 28: Classes begin.
  
• August 31: Students must return a Pre-Entrance Health Record and proof of insurance to Student Health. Failure to do so will result in a registration block and $100 late fee. Please see the Student Health website.
  
• October 6-8: Fall Break.
  
• October 26-28: Family Weekend. We recommend making hotel reservations as soon as possible since local accommodations fill up quickly. The Family Weekend website provides more details and will be updated this fall with the complete schedule.
  

We deeply value the support of parents in the educational process. As you know from your student's previous college experience, your influence and guidance will remain strong as your student meets new academic challenges and adjusts to life in a new environment.

I look forward to seeing you this summer at Orientation, when I will have the opportunity to welcome you and your daughter or son to the Grounds. We hope Orientation will be the beginning of a rewarding new chapter in your family life as you join the University of Virginia community.
