Re: Move-In Days

Dear Parents of New Transfer Students:

Move-In Day is fast approaching, and we are all looking forward to the arrival of the University's newest students. As you prepare for the trip to Charlottesville, I am writing with several reminders that I hope will be helpful.

If your daughter or son will be living in University housing, move-in for all upperclass students, including transfer students, will take place on Saturday, Aug. 20. Complete details are available on the University Housing website: www.virginia.edu/housing

Several highlights and reminders:

Welcome Address: President Teresa A. Sullivan will be speaking to parents and students on Saturday, Aug. 20, from 1 to 2 p.m. in Old Cabell Hall auditorium. We hope you will take a break to enjoy this official welcome from President Sullivan, followed by time for Q&A.

Beginning at 2:15 p.m., the deans of the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, and the School of Nursing also will welcome parents and students. For locations of these talks and other details, please see:

Move-In Day Evaluation: If your daughter or son moved into University housing, it would be helpful to receive your feedback on the move-in process. When you get back home, please take a few moments to let us know how your day went by completing the Opening Survey for Parents, available via a link from the Housing home page http://www.virginia.edu/housing. Your comments and time are appreciated.

Orientation Evaluation: We are also interested in your feedback regarding Summer Orientation. If you attended one of the sessions for parents of transfer students in July, please share your comments and any suggestions via an online evaluation. Forms are also available for your student to comment. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/UVASummerOrientation2001ParentsofTransferStudents  Again, we appreciate you and your student taking the time to help us in reviewing and enhancing this program.

Staying in Touch: The University communicates on a regular basis with parents, using the e-mail address that your student provided with her or his admission application. I send periodic messages that highlight health and safety issues, remind you about key dates, such as flu immunization clinics, and summarize other student life topics that may be of special interest to parents.

Another means of staying informed is through UVaToday. If you would like to receive this daily e-mail with news updates from the University, please go to www.virginia.edu/uvatoday and click on the orange "Sign Up" link at the bottom of the page.

As a reminder, you can always visit the University's main website at www.virginia.edu for the most up-to-date information on activities and events on the Grounds.  In times of emergency or inclement weather, the home page will be updated frequently.

Getting Involved: We look forward to your involvement in programs planned especially for parents and family members.  Family Weekend, programs and activities in your region sponsored by UVaClubs and UVaFamilies, athletic events, travel programs, publications, and the University's website all offer avenues for you to stay informed about the University of Virginia and become an active part of this community.

Please be sure to mark your calendar for Family Weekend, scheduled this fall for Oct. 28-30.  We recommend making hotel reservations as soon as possible since local accommodations fill up quickly.  The website, www.virginia.edu/familyweekend, provides more details and will be updated this fall with the complete schedule.

We deeply value the support of parents in the educational process. Your influence and care, already factors in your student's college success, will remain strong as your student meets new challenges here at the University. Partnering with you, we are especially committed to helping transfer students be successful in all areas of University life.

We look forward to your student's arrival next week, and we wish you well as you prepare for this latest transition in the life of your family.

Safe travels and warm regards,

Patricia M. Lampkin
Vice President and Chief Student Affairs Officer
