Re: Pointers on avoiding or dealing with the flu and similar illnesses

Dear Students:

A widespread flu epidemic is sweeping the nation, and the University of Virginia and Charlottesville are not immune. As of today, more than 100 cases of the flu have been diagnosed at Student Health. The good news is that you can take some easy steps to avoid getting, or spreading, the flu.

How do I avoid getting the flu?

The best way to protect yourself from the flu is to get vaccinated, although supplies in the community are now quite low so be sure to call ahead.

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water. Use hand sanitizer if necessary.
  • Avoid those who are sick, if possible. Stay at least six feet away from someone who is coughing.
  • If caring for a sick roommate, loved one, or friend, wear a plain surgical mask (from Student Health or a pharmacy). The ill person should also wear a mask when others are present.

What if I'm experiencing flu-like symptoms?

Call the Student Health Center at 434-982-3915 or your local care provider. Providing them information on all of your symptoms, including your temperature, is extremely helpful for staff to ascertain if you need to come to the clinic or isolate.

  • If coughing, cough into your sleeve, rather than your hands.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. Use hand sanitizer if necessary.
  • If advised by a healthcare provider to isolate, then do not attend class, work, or leave your living space unless absolutely necessary for at least 24 hours after any fever has subsided.

Best wishes for good health.

Sincerely,

James C. Turner, M.D.
Executive Director of Student Health
