Re: Family Weekend – Oct. 5 Deadline for Dinner Lottery

Dear U.Va. Parents:

Please plan to join us for a special weekend, Oct. 26-28, in Charlottesville as the University welcomes parents and family members to the Grounds. More than 60 events, including concerts, lectures, special tours, and an address on Saturday morning by President Teresa Sullivan, take place throughout the weekend.

Please note this upcoming deadline:

Family Weekend Dinner Lottery: Always a popular event, this year’s dinner will feature as guest speaker Psychology Professor Tim Wilson, a noted author and social psychology expert. The dinner takes place on Friday, October 26, at 6:30 p.m. in the Harrison Institute and Small Special Collections Library. Because interest in the dinner always exceeds available space, a lottery is held to determine participation. Please register for the lottery at www.virginia.edu/familyweekend/domeroom. Deadline: Friday, October 5.

Other highlights include:

Open classes: Friday will feature classes open to parents in the College of Arts and Sciences and other schools. Check the schedule for more details.

Off-Grounds Housing Fair: Meet local landlords and learn about the options for your student to live off Grounds. (Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Newcomb South Meeting Room.)

Fall Convocation and Awarding of Intermediate Honors: The weekend begins with this special event featuring John Simon, executive vice president and provost, as the speaker. Intermediate Honors will be awarded to third-year students who have excelled in their studies. Open to all. For more details, see the Fall Convocation website. (Friday, 2 p.m., John Paul Jones Arena.)

Third-Year Ring Ceremony: Class of 2014 students will receive their U.Va. rings at this traditional ceremony featuring a guest speaker and musical performances. (Friday, 4 to 5 p.m., John Paul Jones Arena.)

Career Services Open House: Drop by the University Career Services office to discover key resources that facilitate your student’s exploration of career options, the relationship between major and career, and action steps for effective implementation of career goals. (Friday, 3 to 5 p.m., Bryant Hall at Scott Stadium.)

Continental Breakfast and Address by President Sullivan: Come to Old Cabell Hall for a breakfast hosted by the Office of Engagement, followed by the President’s address. Her talk will conclude with a Q&A session. (Saturday, 8 to 9:30 breakfast; 9:30 to 11 address.)

CultureFest: A longstanding Family Weekend tradition, CultureFest features performances celebrating an array of ethnicities and cultures. Created and produced by U.Va. students, many of whom perform in their colorful native dress. (Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Aquatics and Fitness Center.)

Open House in Upperclass Residence Halls: Learn more about the advantages of students living on Grounds in their second year and beyond. Students in each upperclass area will be available to show their rooms and apartments and to answer questions. (Saturday, noon to 3 p.m., UTS buses leave from the McCormick Road Residential Area.)

Please continue to check the Family Weekend website for up-to-date details on events, times and locations.

We look forward to seeing you!
