Women's Shelter Drive
Feb. 8 through 22.
Pretty Bird Woman House is the only women's shelter on the Sioux Standing Rock Reservation in McLaughlin, S.D., that helps victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. Because it is always at maximum capacity, the shelter is constantly in need of supplies. Amnesty International, SAPA, and the U.Va. Women's Center will be running a supply drive in February. We are collecting, among other things, towels, bed sheets and blankets, toiletries, toys, clothing, and money. The drive will be taking place in February, but please start collecting these items now. Madison House Tutoring Program: Register now to improve a child's education.
Registration deadline: Jan. 28.
Are you busy? Don’t have a lot of time to offer, but still want to have a positive impact on a child’s life? Madison House Tutoring is the program for you. Volunteer for one to two hours a week at one of 16 schools in the Charlottesville area. We provide carpools if you don’t have a car. You can tutor a student of any age, grades K-12, in any subject. Publish in the Oculus Research Journal
Deadline for submissions: Feb. 6., 5 p.m.
Submit your research to the Oculus, the Undergraduate Research Network's interdisciplinary research journal. Papers should be submitted as a Microsoft Word document in 12-point font, Times New Roman, and they should be double-spaced. Please submit your entries and direct your questions via e-mail.


Studies


Do you like to drink beer?
Volunteers ages 21 to 45 are needed for a new investigational medication study examining cravings for alcohol. Participants will take two five-day periods of an investigational medication (Strattera®) and make five outpatient visits to the U.Va. C.A.R.E. clinic. On two visits, participants are asked to rate their mood and craving levels after drinking alcohol. Study-related tests include blood, urine, and breath alcohol level. Medication and mental and physical exams are provided at no charge. Compensation is up to $200. ATX Alcohol Study IRB-HSR No. 13464.
