Newcomb Hall Event Planning Office: Opening of the Books

The Newcomb Hall Event Planning Office begins accepting reservation requests from active CIOs, FOAs, Agency and Special Status student groups on May 3, and from University departments on May 10. Requests must be submitted exclusively via The SOURCE website and will be processed beginning May 22. Email reservenewcomb@gmail.com if you have any questions.

To apply, please send a one-page resume and a proposal of no more than 500 words to uptousteam@gmail.com. Proposal must include: 1. whether you are applying for an internship stipend or research grant, 2. your work/project description, 3. how your internship or research relates to policy, today's fiscal situation, or public service, 4. how your work will further your academic, personal, and professional goals, 5. how you will sustain your work into the future, and 6. whether you have other financial support. OPPORTUNITIES
Photo Submission Contest: The Faces of U.Va. Public Service
Deadline: May 9.
Do you have a great snapshot of you or other University students engaged in public service? Submit it to the Faces of U.Va. Public Service photo contest. Prizes include an honorary spot on the Learning in Action website, a $25 gift card to Para Coffee, and a chance for your photo to appear on the wall of the Programs and Councils Center ("the PAC"). To submit, please visit the website. Multiple winners will be announced on May 10 via email.
U.Va. Bookstore: Textbook Buyback and Rental Return
Through May 10, U.Va. Bookstore; and May 6 through 10, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., TJ’s Locker.
Sell your books to the U.Va. Bookstore or TJ’s Locker for cash, free candy, and a coupon for 20 percent off in our clothing department. Don't forget to order your Fall 2013 textbooks online. If you order your textbooks by Aug. 21, they will be ready for pick-up at the Bookstore. The U.Va. Bookstore hours are 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Interning with the McIntire Department of Music: Apply Now
Do you love concerts and enjoy taking pictures? Do you want to coordinate volunteers or design advertisements? If music and publicity interest you, then consider interning for the McIntire Department of Music. Summer Orientation: ITS Seeking Two Student Temporary Workers for Six Weeks
Application deadline: May 13.
If you will be at U.Va. in June and July, are outgoing, and love the University, consider helping Information Technology Services staff our booth at Summer Orientation. Join ITS staff for four hours per week to talk with parents and incoming students about the tech environment at U.Va. and ITS services. You must be available to attend all Summer Orientation Resource Fair sessions in July. Training will be provided in late June. Hourly wage is commensurate with experience. Bridging the Gap: Register to Volunteer
Make an enduring impact on the life of a child who needs your help. Join Bridging the Gap (BTG), a Madison House program that pairs U.Va. students with refugee children resettled in the Charlottesville-Albemarle area. Through the program, you will have the opportunity to be a mentor, tutor, and friend to an incredible child from whom you will likely learn as much as she or he learns from you. Lorna Sundberg International Center: International Cooking Programs

Learn how to make food from all over the world: Southern Italian, Mexican, Northern Chinese, Indian, and Caribbean. The cooking programs are a part of monthly programs at the International Center. Each person is limited to one per month. We only have a few spots open and registrations are first-come, first-serve. The program is free, but you must register online. OFFScreen: Holy Motors

OFFScreen is having its last screening of the year this Sunday. Join Monsieur Oscar on his soulful journey by limousine through the streets of Paris as he transforms into multiple characters for a series of mysterious “appointments.” Melding monster movie, film noir, romantic drama, musical, crime thriller, and anime, Leos Carax’s mind-bending masterwork is a ravishing fever dream of becoming, unraveling, and starting all over again. - Events should be posted on the Student Activities
Calendar. Connections limits postings of events.
- Submit your item for Connections online by Mondays at
noon. Connections is distributed to all undergraduates and to graduate
students in the College on most Wednesday evenings when classes are in
session.
- Postings should be brief, generally less than 70
words. Submit your posting in plain text - no italics, boldface or
indentations.
- In the interest of brevity and newsworthiness, repeat
submissions may be denied.
- Connections is edited and published by the Office of
the Vice President for Student Affairs, and this office determines the
suitability of all items for publication.
