University of Virginia Jumpstart Program
A Program of the Vice President and Chief Student Affairs Officer

Jumpstart a national non-profit organization primarily funded by Americorps, places achievement-oriented college students in yearlong one-to-one mentoring relationships with 3- to 5-year-old children enrolled in Head Start and other early education programs.

The Vice President for Student Affairs office partnered with Jumpstart beginning in fall 2004 to bring this acclaimed program to the University of Virginia and the Charlottesville Public Schools. Currently, 48 U.Va. students serve as Jumpstart Corps Members, spending 10 to 15 hours a week with children in six local preschool programs and helping them develop early language, literacy, and social skills. U.Va. is one of 66 institutions of higher education nationwide partnering with Jumpstart to serve their local communities.
