U.Va. Jumpstart Program

A Program of the Vice President and Chief Student Affairs Officer

Jumpstart is looking for enthusiastic people to join our team!

Jumpstart is a work-study and AmeriCorps program that recruits college students to mentor 3-5 year-old children from low-income communities in language, literacy, and other essential school-readiness skills. Read stories, sing songs and play games that support young children's learning, and earn a competitive work-study wage ($8.25 per hour for undergrads/$15 per hour for graduate students) PLUS a $1,000 AmeriCorps Education Award in the process.

Each Jumpstart Corps Member is paired with a partner child in a local preschool program. Corps Members work 10 hours per week at the centers, planning and facilitating enrichment sessions and gaining classroom experience by assisting full time teachers. We also host fun field trips for the children, including the annual Snowman Festival at Newcomb Hall and the Jumpstart for a Day learning fair at the Amphitheatre. Jumpstart is committed to giving back to the community, so we plan service days and partner with organizations like Habitat for Humanity to help those in need.

Join us! Add valuable skills and experience to your resume, earn money for yourself and your education, and make a difference in the life of a child all at the same time. Graduate and undergraduate students of all majors and backgrounds are welcome. Just go to www.jstart.org/apply to submit an application.
